RE/MAX Checkmate realtors is a family-owned–and-operated full service real estate agency in Johnson City, TN and that is something broker and owner Larry S. McClanahan is very proud of.
Larry moved to Johnson City with his wife and two children in the early 1970's eager to start a career in real estate. At that time, he only dreamed of one day starting his own company.
After years of working for someone else, he opened Checkmate Real Estate as an independent firm in 1983 with only three agents. Realizing the need to offer more benefits to his agents and more services to his customers, Larry franchised the company with a national company after only a few years.
Since that time, he joined the RE/MAX organization, which has more than 7,000 offices and more than 119,300 associates in 65 countries. RE/MAX is one of the most recognized names and corporate logos in the world.
Locally, Larry has grown his office to be the largest real estate company in the Johnson City area with more than 60 agents.
Larry's daughter, Rhonda Sampson, started working with him in the early 1980s and since that time, has listed and sold properties while helping to manage the office. With the growth of the office, she made the decision recently to manage solely so she could be more available for the agents on a day-to-day basis.
"It is great working together and having a family atmosphere within our office," Sampson said. "Growing up, I never had an interest in real estate, but after I got my license and started working, I knew it was in my blood."
"People ask me all the time how I work with family every day, and I tell them that we each have our own roles but we are here to support one another if we need to, so it works out perfectly for us."
Larry's wife, Janice, and his son, Mike, work as a sales team within the office.
"Teams work great in this industry," Janice said. "For a mother-and-son team it works even better."
"We feel we are able to better serve our customers by working as a team. We can get more done and hopefully offer our clients more for their money by working together."
Larry said he is proud to be associated with the 60-plus agents he has in his office.
"They are an extended part of our family," he said. "They are the reason we are the No. 1 company in the area. It is due to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their customers' needs."
"I can't make someone have it in them to sell real estate; all I can do is offer them a place to work and the tools to do it with. They have to do the rest."
"This is a hard business with long hours. To make it in real estate today, you have to not only be educated about your market, but understand your customers' needs. Most people just want to know you truly care about them."
"I have always felt like one sale alone does not make or break an agent, but what is important is to build a lifetime customer."
One reason the company has continued to grow by agents and market share is its strong support staff, Sampson said.
'They do a great job," she said. "They are the backbone to our company, and we would not be in our market position today if it were not for them and the work they do behind the scenes for all of us."
